This is a State Park FAR AWAY from most anything. The campground is over 4 miles from the front gate. This is a nice park. Although I will admit, the mosquitoes are terrible! DEET repellant works very well, so once you get sprayed, the annoyance goes away. Don't go out without it. The county sprayed once while we were there, and that cut down on the number of mosquitoes that night, but as soon as the breeze picked back up the next day, it blew in a fresh crop of them. This is a State Park FAR AWAY from most anything. The campground is over 4 miles from the front gate. This is a nice park. Although I will admit, the mosquitoes are terrible! DEET repellant works very well, so once you get sprayed, the annoyance goes away. Don't go out without it. The county sprayed once while we were there, and that cut down on the number of mosquitoes that night, but as soon as the breeze picked back up the next day, it blew in a fresh crop of them.
The park staff all seemed friendly and helpful.
The campground area is very nice. Most of the sites are good sized. The bathhouses are in great shape and clean. Most everyone parks away from the roads and the people staying here are fairly quiet during quiet hours.
The beach areas are really nice. Plenty of room for everyone and they are actually pretty good for shelling.
Now for the area. We ate at all three of the restaurants on the island. They are good. Nothing fantastic, but on the same token nothing terrible. You'll need to drive a ways to get to anything else (drive to the mainland). There are no fuel stations on the island, so you'll need to go over the bridge to get filled up (almost an hour round trip from the campground).
Like I said at the beginning, this campground is a long way away from everything. You'll also need to drive into town to get any reliable data connections with your phone. We received part time 1X service in the campground, with no WIFI available. This is actually a good thing for some people, as we actually enjoyed talking and planning. Lastly, only plan on receiving 3 tv stations. The others may come in for an hour or two during the night, but the only thing you can regularly pick up is the FSU Public Broadcasting stations. Not a wealth of programming there.
All in all, a nice park for doing what you normally do in a state park, get out and enjoy the nature. Just be sure to bring your insect repellant or life will not be good!
We didn't see any of the mice or rats as some people reported earlier in the year. We did see a few well fed snakes (king and rat snakes, which are safe). They stayed to the brushy areas, so no need to get worried over them. As a benefit, king snakes help keep down the poisonous snake population as well.

We normally stay here in the fall. Thought we would try August for a change. The camp sites were infested with mice, rats, and mosquitoes! They are supposed to spray on Tuesdays and Fridays for mosquitoes. They came by once in a two week period and the spraying did not do a thing! You could not sit outside! The mice and rats were taking over. They were not afraid of people and would come right up to your chairs, disgusting. Never again! We used to really enjoy coming here.
