Stayed with our family for almost two weeks. Arrived late in the evening (after gate closing), after being delayed in North Carolina, and (granted) we should have called ahead to say so. Called the gate number and was greeted with an answer of "Do you know what time it is?" and "I work long hours and am not coming to open the gate." I was shocked that someone would take the time to answer the phone just to berate a CUSTOMER like that. We camped in a parking lot for the nearby bike trail overnight... Read More

I was shocked that someone would take the time to answer the phone just to berate a CUSTOMER like that. We camped in a parking lot for the nearby bike trail overnight until the gate opened the next morning. Found out that all the guy had to do was give us the gate code and we could have camped in our own site (that we had previously reserved and paid for online), and that working long hours consists mostly of sitting on your rear end waiting for someone to check in. Enjoyed the beautiful forest and lake immensely during our stay. Lots of wildlife. The kids had fun catching and releasing toads and identifying frogs and toads by their calls at night ('tis the season!). They saw several varieties of birds, spiders, squirrels, lizards, an alligator and a deer. They could not believe that the people who arrived in site 58 the day before we left chose to spray poison around their site as their first activity. Give me a break, you are in the forest!!! Saw several campers with dogs. The campsites and facilities are very well maintained, and each campsite has a firepit. The groundskeeper was VERY kind and helpful during our stay, and we shared some good stories and life experiences. Only a few sites here big enough for our 43' fifth wheel, but definitely worth the stay. Reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov by putting 'petersburg' into the search field.
