I have stayed at this campsite many times over the years, but until April of 2018 it has always been as a tent camper. This April we bought our first travel trailer (a 21' Starcraft camper, which is actually 25' from bumper to tongue) and this was the first campgrounds we went to. We knew the area already and we have always enjoyed going there, is pet friendly (which is important to us) so it only made sense. The grounds are always well maintained, staff is friendly and helpful and it is relatively... Read More

We knew the area already and we have always enjoyed going there, is pet friendly (which is important to us) so it only made sense. The grounds are always well maintained, staff is friendly and helpful and it is relatively close to our home (~45 minutes away). The sites are partial hook up: power and water, with the dump station located on the way out. Many sites are next to the water, and there are quite a few with pull through sites. This April, we stayed at site 41, which is a pull through. Some friends stayed at the site next to us (42) which is also a pull through. To be honest, we liked the view from 42 a little better than the view from 41, but both views were nice. Our site did have a nice gradual decent to the water, whereas site 42 had a somewhat drastic slope down to the water, so we liked our site better in this respect. Power checked out fine at both sites with a multimeter, and the water flowed clear and good too. The sites were clean, and looked like some work had been done on them recently. The pad to park our camper is paved, with a gravel pad our front with the picnic table, a fire pit, grill and a tall stand to hang lights from (which is weighted down with cement inside a tire, which makes it easy to move around. This is also a great spot to tie a cable for our dogs to be leashed to. The sites that we were at looks like those gravel pads had recently been redone. Rather than outlining them with wooden cross ties, they were now outlined with nice cement walls. The gravel contained within them is also nice because it is smaller gravel which creates a flatter surface and is nicer to bare feet when barefoot than larger rocks. Some of the areas around/between the sites was a little grown up, but nothing too bad, and it was a little nice because it somewhat separated some of the area's, and made it feel a little more outdoorsy... The facilities are clean with good running hot water and the shower stalls close off with an actual door (as opposed to just a shower curtain) and offers both a changing area and the actual shower area (which does have a shower curtain). There are a couple of small trails through a wooded area that is pretty well maintained, and makes for a nice little walk, especially with the dogs. There is another trail that leads next to an outdoor amphitheater and down to the white sandy beach, although animals are not allowed on the beach. Overall, we have been very happy every time we have gone to Piney Grove, and this time with our camper was no different. It would be nice if there was a general store on the premises, and even better if the sites had sewer too, however, we are typically only out for a Friday and Saturday night, so we are good about picking up all that we need before arriving, and don't need to dump until we leave out on the way home, so these things are deal breakers. Based on proximity to us, and what we are looking for I would give this campground a 5 star rating. However, for a more fair rating, I would say about a 4.2 would be honest. Piney Grove is a very friendly place, with nice sites, helpful staff, clean/useful facilities and is kid and pet friendly. I would definitely recommend staying here if you are in the area. We are actually going back in 2 weeks! Can't wait! :)
