One Tank Trip for Wisconsin Camping

It's true: Wisconsin is proud of its cheese, boasting the largest variety of award winning cheeses in the country. But there is more to America's Dairyland than the fine cheese produced here. Sometimes referred to as the Midwest's Cape Cod, Wisconsin's beautiful countryside and rolling hills resemble Europe more than the Midwest, and visitors here are often surprised to find a wealth of unique culture and beauty unlike any other place. We're going to start our one tank trip in Sturgeon Bay. Depending on who you ask, Sturgeon Bay was either named for its resemblance to a sturgeon, or because of the abundance of fish found in both Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Whatever the reason, Sturgeon Bay remains one of the most popular destinations within the state, drawing thousands who come to enjoy the endless water sports and fishing opportunities to be found here. Being surrounded by so much inspirational beauty, it should be no surprise that Sturgeon Bay also has a very healthy art community, with several local artisans displaying their works in the galleries found throughout the area. No trip to Sturgeon Bay would be complete without exploring the rich maritime heritage that still flourishes today, including a trip to the Door County Maritime Museum where the history of this area comes to life. Within the museum, you'll have the opportunity to explore each of the four diverse galleries within the 20,000 sq. ft. building, ranging from shipbuilding to the Great Storm of 1913. While parked on the waterfront, you'll find a beautifully restored 1919 big red tug, which is now open for tours. Heading on to our next Wisconsin RV camping destination, take WI-42 N out of Sturgeon Bay, taking a left at Co Rd G. You'll have to take another left to stay on Co Rd G, and in less than an hour you should have arrived at beautiful Egg Harbor. What a charmer! A stroll through this village, and you'll soon discover why it's a popular destination for travelers. A wide variety of shops and galleries (all of which maintain that wonderful old Wisconsin charm), an exquisite variety of restaurants where you can sample the local fair, and all set against the dramatic beauty of the coast make Egg Harbor a spectacular destination for a wide variety of travelers. In case you're wondering, Egg Harbor was named for a good-natured “war” that broke out among a landing party in 1825 that ended in a huge egg fight that left everyone - from traders to spectators - covered in eggs, and the shoreline littered with eggshells. Our next Wisconsin RV camping stop takes us back to Co Rd G toward E Shore Rd. Turn right at Co Rd E, and left WI-57 N to arrive at Baileys Harbor. Located on what locals refer to as “the quiet side of the harbor”, Baileys Harbor is an awesome destination for relaxing or getting your fill of the many activities to be found here, including kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and fishing. One of the most popular attractions in this area is the Cana Island Lighthouse, where visitors can explore the original keeper’s house. Nearby, you'll find Ridges Sanctuary, a 1200-acre nature preserve boasting some 5 miles of hiking trails and a variety of native flowers which add to the beauty of the walk. Let's move onto Sister Bay, a short drive along WI-42 N. By far one of the most popular villages in the county, Sister Bay's beautiful natural environment beckons travelers of varied interests. The waters bordering Green Bay and Lake Michigan offer many opportunities for fishing and kayaking, and if you've never had the pleasure of a Door County Fish Boil, you don't know what you've been missing. Don’t leave this area without indulging yourself in at least one! Our last one tank trip location takes us to beautiful Ellison Bay, a short drive away on WI-42 N. Visitors to this incredible location will find a wealth of unique shopping opportunities, many of which come from local artisans and potters. For the shopper, this is nirvana! Nearby Newport State Park is a semi-wilderness area that contains some great hiking along secluded trails, and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, which offers some peace and quiet from the commotion. There is plenty to explore here, including headlands, coves, and lots and lots of beaches. Words just don't seem to do this scenic and exciting section of Wisconsin justice. This area is by far one of the most spectacular destinations within the state, and the options for recreation and good old-fashioned fun are as numerous as the fish in Lake Michigan!
