One Tank Trip for West Virginia Camping

Any savvy traveler will tell you, West Virginia has it all. With the heart of the graceful Appalachian Mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop, West Virginia is one of the best kept secrets within the eastern US. Here you'll find the beauty of rural locales, scenic and serene vistas, a host of outdoor activity, and four distinct seasons to do it in. Our one tank trip begins in Sutton. By any standards, Sutton is a tiny little town located in the center of the state, and surrounded by the beauty of the West Virginia countryside. But they do have a closely guarded secret in the form of Sutton Lake, which is a bass fisherman's dream, and one any angler is sure to love. Stretching over 14 miles, with more than 40 miles of shoreline, the lake won't disappoint you! Our next West Virginia RV camping stop takes us to Summersville, a short drive on US-19 S. It's been said that Summersville Lake is one of the cleanest and clearest of the freshwater lakes east of the Mississippi. Characterized by steep and rocky cliffs, Summersville Lake draws travelers looking for a variety of water sports - from boating and swimming, to fishing for bass, walleye and catfish. Due to the clarity of the lake, divers and snorkelers are drawn to this area as well. For the history buffs, you'll find the Carnifex Ferry Battlefield war site nearby, and the area provides a wealth of opportunities for hiking with many interpretive signs throughout the trails provide some insight into the historic battle fought here. Return to US-19 S for the less than an hour drive to our next West Virginia RV camping location, Fayetteville. You will exhaust yourself before you ever run out of fun and excitement in Fayetteville! Due to its location in the heart of one of the most sought after locales in the state, Fayetteville is at the very center of exciting outdoor recreation opportunities including mountain biking, rock climbing, bird watching, hiking, hunting, fishing, and for the true adventurer, white water rafting. And if you're looking for something a little tamer as far as adventure goes, don't worry; Fayetteville has a wonderfully historic downtown area waiting to be explored, several exceptional and eclectic restaurants to entice you, and some first class shopping opportunities to be had as well. Moving further down US-19 S takes us to our last one tank trip location, Beckley. It's hard not to feel the relaxed, quaint vibe of this city from the moment you set foot within its borders. If you want to get a feel for what coal mining is all about, you can tour around in a coal car at the Exhibition Coal Mine, which takes you on an underground tour. Or if you're making your trip in the summertime, pack up a picnic and head over to the blueberry farm, where you can pick blueberries to your heart's content. There is also no shortage of excitement or outdoor fun in Beckley. You can choose to keep it mild with some birdwatching or golf, or go full out with whitewater rafting, rock climbing or ATVs. Just pick your poison, and it's all right here! With so much to see and do, you just might find yourself setting up camp and staying awhile.
