One Tank Trip for South Carolina Camping

Sponsored by: Myrtle Beach Campground Association www.campmyrtlebeach.com [email protected] It's hard not to fall in love with South Carolina. A rich, and exotic blend of world renowned southern hospitality, centuries old history, and idyllic ocean settings makes this state one of the most sought after locations for an amazing array of activities. Entertainment venues are found throughout the state, from water and theme parks, to a never-ending array of outdoor activities. If all of that doesn't get you, then the mild year-round climate will! Beginning our one tank trip in Myrtle Beach, a city located on a 60 mile stretch of some of the most breathtaking beach in the country, it is also widely known as a golfers paradise. With an average winter temperature in the 50s, it's the perfect place to refine your game on any one of several courses around the city. A must stop on a visit to Myrtle Beach is the beautiful Hopsewee Plantation. Built in 1740, this regal plantation was the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. A visit here is like stepping back into history. For a little fun and excitement, stop by the Freestyle Amusement Park. A 55-acre park, with music themed attractions, like “The Time Machine”, a 150-foot tall, 65-mph steel coaster, with built-in speakers that blast a variety of songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. A great way to combine a love of music, with the hair-raising experience of an amusement park ride! Once your stomach has settled, let's hit the road to our next South Carolina RV camping stop, Murrells Inlet. A short drive on US-17 S along the beautiful coast will get you there in no time, and it is the perfect place to slow it down a bit after all that excitement in Myrtle Beach. Murrells Inlet is a historic fishing village where you can indulge on some of the finest, and freshest fish you have ever had. Local fishing markets offer the catch of the day for those looking for something to throw on the grill later, or bring your pole and try to wrestle in your own catch of the day from the peaceful waters of the inlet. Travelers here will also enjoy the amazing Brookgreen Gardens. Originally four rice plantations, and boasting some 10,000 acres, Brookgreen is home to several themed gardens, sculptures, the Lowcountry Zoo, and trails that run through several ecosystems on the property. The perfect place to relax, take a stroll and unwind! Murrells Inlet is a stop widely known to birdwatchers as one of the best places to get a glimpse of some rare and beautiful creatures. Back onto US-17 S, and a little further down the breathtaking coast, brings us to McClellanville. Home to the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, this area brings nature and birding enthusiasts, by the thousands. Established in 1932 as a migratory bird refuge, and only accessible by boat, the refuge is the largest nesting rookery for loggerhead sea turtles outside of Florida, with approximately 1000 nests per year. There are few places like this in the world, and a great way to see some endangered wildlife. Returning to US-17 S, we continue our one tank trip along the coast to the incomparable Charleston. Upon arrival, it's difficult not to notice the 300-year-old history reflected in this coastal city. In the historic district of Charleston, there are some 2000 historic buildings, and all of them are surrounded by several beautiful plantation homes, many of which are still in use today. Highly recommended is a walking tour of old Charleston, and travelers will find the haunting legends and folk tales tour particularly fascinating. Filled with Gullah superstitions, stories of resident ghosts, and haunted inns, it just might make the hair on the back of your neck stand up a little! For our last South Carolina RV camping stop, it's back to US-17 S to Hilton Head. One of the most family friendly destinations in the world, Hilton Head offers an assortment of outdoor fun, and was named one of the top ten family beaches in the country. Only 12 miles wide, it's amazing what is packed into such a narrow strip of land! Besides the incredible beaches, golfers will be in heaven on any one of the 24 courses to be found here. World class shopping, some exquisite dining, sandy beaches, and much, much more await. Hilton Head is a little piece of paradise, and one that will cater to just about any interest or lifestyle. South Carolina offers visitors a chance to enjoy this modern age, while still discovering the rich past that helped mold and shape this country, and it's the perfect place to enjoy the best of both worlds.
