One Tank Trip for Montana Camping

Dubbed the “last best place”, Montana is filled with inspiring landscapes, short grass prairies, and some of the most breathtaking mountain ranges in the nation. Montana is Big Sky country where antelope and buffalo still roam freely, and the spirit and allure of the Old West is alive and well. Our first one tank trip stop, Missoula, sits along the Clark Fork River and upon an ancient glacial lake bed surrounded by millions of acres of forest, and just 30 miles of Montana's most intact ghost town, Garnet. As the largest city in western Montana, visitors are attracted to extraordinary opportunities for recreation and the inspiring scenery. You can't visit Missoula without having a look at the first fully hand-carved carousel to be built in the US since the Great Depression. Created by hundreds of volunteers, over 100,000 hours were spent laboring over this amazing piece of art, which will definitely make you feel like a kid again. When you need a break from all the fishing, hiking, skiing, kayaking, and other activities, stop by the Fort Missoula National Historic Site. Nestled on 32 acres at the core of historic Fort Missoula, visitors can explore several historic structures on the site as well as a collection of artifacts in the museum that tell the fascinating history of this wonderful city and surrounding area. For bird enthusiasts, or those looking for a great place for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, the Eureka Riverwalk is the place you want to be. The Riverwalk spans 2 acres, includes a bridge over Sinclair Creek, and is a great place to see the natural beauty of this area at its best. Leaving Missoula, take Old US 93 E to I-90 W, and merge onto US-93 N to arrive at our next breathtaking Montana RV camping stop, Polson. Nestled on the banks of Flathead Lake - the largest body of freshwater found west of the Continental Divide - this charming city is surrounded by cherry orchards, and hosts the annual Cherry Festival. Flathead Lake is a great place to do some boating, trout fishing, as well as many other water sports, and for the bird enthusiast, Pablo Wildlife Refuge is the place you'll want to visit for some excellent bird spotting. For a taste of Polson's past, The Miracle of America and Polson-Flathead Historical Museum offers many displays and memorabilia. Visitors may also find Wild Horse Island worth a visit. The largest island in Flathead Lake, this landmark is rich in history since the Salish-Kootenai Indians reportedly kept their horses here to keep them from being stolen by other tribes. Accessed only by boat, this 2,000 park preserves an endangered palouse prairie environment, incredible wildlife, and wild horses that still roam freely here. Leaving Polson, take US-35 S around Flathead Lake, merge onto MT-82 W and then onto US-93 N to our last Montana RV camping destination, Kalispell. If you're looking to dive head first into a rugged adventure, you've come to the right place! Kalispell offers travelers a wealth of wilderness adventures and there are plenty of guides available to ensure you have a safe visit with the least amount of impact on this beautiful and fragile environment. Kalispell has been growing in leaps and bounds, and is home to a flourishing art community, boasting several art galleries and studios. Visitors will also find the Conrad Mansion here, a beautifully preserved pre-1900 mansion, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of elegance. On display throughout the home are several period pieces of furniture, as well as clothing, giving visitors a peek into several generations of the family who once lived there. A short drive from Kalispell is Glacier National Park, one of the most exquisite and pristine pieces of wilderness left in the nation. Boasting 1.4 million acres of rugged landscape shaped by slow moving glaciers millions of years ago (50 of which are still active), travelers here are sure to be blown away by the sweeping landscape and grand vistas. If you like your recreation a little wilder, a little more rugged and a bit more breathtaking, you've choose the right one tank trip! Montana can challenge even the most experienced outdoorsman, and immediately leaves you with an overwhelming desire to do it all again.
