One Tank Trip for Mississippi Camping

Sponsored by: Cajun RV Park www.cajunrvpark.com [email protected] Southern Hospitality and the beautiful rural nature of this state draw tourists by the thousands every year. Considered the truest southern state by some, Mississippi is also the birthplace of the Delta Blues, and some of the most gorgeous countryside in the country. Laid back, genteel, and proud of its landmark capitol building, Jackson is a great place to start our one tank trip. Once named 'LeFleur's Bluff', the city of Jackson has a wealth of things to do and places to explore. If culture is what you seek, Jackson has what you need! The city has several museums, namely the Mississippi Museum of Art, which houses an impressive collection from Warhol to O'Keefe, and if you get lucky, you just might catch a live jazz performance that are occasionally held there. Eudora Welty, one of Mississippi's most famous writers, called Jackson home, and it's here that you can tour her historic Belhaven home and gardens she built with her mother. Also notable is the Russel C. Davis Planetarium. One of the most impressive and largest in the world, a distinct feature of the planetarium is the huge wrap-around screen that presents regular Sky Shows on astronomy, astronauts, and space exploration. Downtown, you'll find the Governor's Mansion, the second oldest, continuously occupied governor's residence in the US. Many historians consider this mansion to be one of the best surviving examples of Greek revival architecture. The next stop on our one tank trip is the city of Gulfport, just a short scenic drive on SH-49 S. Not only does the city have some incredible beaches, there are several championship golf courses, museums, historical buildings, cultural displays and exhibits, and casinos. The Stennis Space Center is a top attraction in this city, and the perfect place to discover interesting facts regarding oceanographic, environmental, and space studies. The Crosby Arboretum is another spectacular attraction, featuring 64 acres of nature trails, 300 species of plants, and a picturesque pavilion designed by famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. The Ship Island Ferry will take you from the Gulfport Small Craft Harbor to an incredible expanse of white sand beach on Sand Island. There is no place better to do some fishing, or just lounge on the beach and gaze out at the beautiful emerald green water. Heading off to our next Mississippi RV camping stop, take I-10 E along the beautiful Gulf Coast to Biloxi. The chief destination on the Gulf, Biloxi is the state's oldest city, founded by the French in 1699. If you're looking for a peek at true Southern culture, you've come to the right place. Biloxi boasts several gorgeous homes, many of which were built in the mid 1800s, and are open to the public for tours. Beach lovers will relish the nearly 30 miles of stunning beach, and the endless array of water sports to be had here. The barrier islands that sit off the coast of Biloxi are the perfect place to do some hiking, fishing, beach combing, and bird watching. Biloxi also features a 44,000 gallon Gulf of Mexico exhibit, a Mardi Gras museum, and is the location of Beauvoir, the home and library of Confederate President, Jefferson Davis. A hop, skip, and a jump on I-10 E from Biloxi brings us to our last Mississippi RV camping stop, Gautier. If you want to look at the beautiful local wildlife in their natural settings, take a trip to the Sandhill Crane National wildlife Refuge. Here, you can walk trails that lead you through several different habitats in this expansive 19,000-acre facility. Also available are eco-tours along the Pascagoula River, the longest unimpeded river in the lower 48, which flows 80 miles from its confluence to the Gulf of Mexico. Interpretive tours will introduce you to the natural habitats of the Cyprus swamps and salt marshes of the river. Visitors will see an abundance of migratory birds - pelicans, herons, osprey, egrets, and bald eagles, and maybe just a few alligators as well! Mississippi offers every traveler a very unique experience, whether you're looking for some amazing outdoor experience, culture, or just plain fun. Mississippi does it all with the grace and generosity the South is known for. Other Area Sponsors in Mississippi: Baywood RV Park and Campground, Inc.
