A road trip through Maryland takes you on a diverse journey, from our nation’s capital through acres and acres of vineyards and awe-inspiring scenery, culminating in a visit to Maryland’s eastern shores and the fabulous beaches that await you. Maryland’s a state that’s rich with history and culture, and filled to all four borders with beautiful scenery that just begs to be enjoyed.
There’s no better place to start off than Washington, D.C., which is an ideal multi-day vacation destination in and of itself. The Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Library of Congress, the Jefferson Memorial, and of course the White House – all can easily occupy a day or two. The Smithsonian is another target destination for tourists from all over the world, as is the nearby College Park Aviation Museum, which sits on the grounds of College Park Airport, the world’s oldest continuously operating airport, dating back to 1909. The museum features exhibits of original and re-created aircraft dating from the earliest days of man’s attempts to fly, to aviation in the present day, and the airport’s runway can be observed through the museum’s windows so visitors can watch takeoffs and landings during their stay. After all, it’s a still-functioning airport!
It’s only 24 miles on the eastbound US-50 to get to Annapolis, the state capital as well as the “Sailing Capital of the World.” The Annapolis Maritime Museum is devoted to preserving this rich seafaring history, and has many exhibits that tell the tale of the arrival of European settlers to the Chesapeake Bay area and follows through the pages of time to the area’s development as a fishing community. A walking tour of Annapolis will take you along a route that highlights various museums and historic homes that are open to the public. Another fascinating place to visit is the U.S. Naval Academy, founded in 1845. Tours of this grand facility are available, which illustrate the rigorous process undertaken by young students as they seek to become naval and marine officers.
Your final destination of Ocean City lies eastward, accessed at first by the US-50, which you’ll stay on for a little over 20 miles until you come to the MD-404, which continues east for 30 miles until it becomes the DE-404-E. Continue on this road for another 14 miles, and then merge with the eastbound US-50 for the remaining 5 miles that gets you into Ocean City. There are so many things to do, such as enjoying a stroll along the historic Boardwalk and chowing down on some old-fashioned saltwater taffy and caramel popcorn. Bring a blanket and spend a day on the 10-mile stretch of Ocean City’s beachfront. Nearby Assateague Island is an excellent place to go for a nature hike; there’s every chance you’ll spot deer and wild horses while you’re out there. Ocean City has no shortage of antique shops to explore, or places for you to drop a fishing line and try your luck. After all, Ocean City is considered to be the “Marlin Capital of the World,” so there’s a better-than-even chance of success! The town also plays host to many special events throughout the year, such as Springfest, a four-day celebration featuring good food, great music, and a whole lot of fun, and the Ocean City Airshow in June, a dazzling display of aerobatics and daredevil maneuvers, as well as ground-based displays of aircraft past and present – it’s definitely fun for all.
One thing about a trip through Maryland – despite its relatively small size, you’ll want to plan to add a few more days to your trip to be sure to catch it all. Many good things really do come in small packages: Maryland is proof positive of that!
