One Tank Trip for Maine Camping

Maine is a state that epitomizes the look and feel of New England. Some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country can be found here; from the picturesque harbor towns, to rugged coastlines, to the heavily forested interior of the state, travelers will be won over at every corner. Maine is an experience like no other, and you just haven't lived until you dive head first into the freshest seafood to be found anywhere in the US! We begin our one tank trip today in the city of Millinocket. From humble beginnings as a mill town, Millinocket embodies the natural beauty of Maine. It was this town that famous New Hampshire writer and naturalist, Henry David Thoreau, visited on his excursion into the Maine wilderness, and Millinocket would find it's way into the novel “The Maine Woods”. What did Thoreau find here? Beautiful rolling hills and scenic vistas that seem to be endless. It's easy to fall in love with this area, and many travelers find themselves coming back to this tranquil haven again and again. Anglers will find this area both challenging and rewarding with the lakes teeming with bass, salmon, lake and brook trout, and many others. Nearby Baxter State Park provides the outdoor enthusiast with ample opportunities for hiking, boating, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. The northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail is located on top of breathtaking Mt.Katahdin's peak, and the mountain provides a scenic backdrop for your getaway. Moving on to our next Maine RV camping stop, Houlton, take ME-157 E to I-95 N. In approximately an hour and a half, you will have arrived. In the early 1900s, this charming town was one of the richest communities in the US. Victorian mansions constructed during Houlton's heyday can be found throughout the city, and the beautifully maintained Market Square District contains an impressive collection of historic buildings worth exploring during your visit. For the outdoor enthusiast, Houlton will impress with some of the best snowmobiling and ATV trail riding in the Northeast, as well as canoeing and hiking. Don't forget your fishing pole! You'll want to cast a line and try your angling skills! The last Maine RV camping stop on our one tank trip is the city of Presque Isle. Taking US-1 N out of Houlton, continue on US-1 N for approximately 42 miles. Because Northern Maine is the closest landmass to Europe, Presque Isle was chosen as a take-off for planes and equipment headed overseas during WWII, and in 1978, Presque Isle was once again chosen as a take-off point for Double Eagle II, the first hot air balloon to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Is it any wonder that Presque Isle should be a favorite spot to celebrate taking to the air at the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest? Visitors come from across the state and beyond, for a weekend of food, music, fun, and of course, balloons! Usually held in late August, it's an event you won't want to miss. For more outdoor fun than you can handle, head over to the Nordic Heritage Center. This four-season recreation facility will challenge and delight all visitors with over 20 miles of mountain bike trails, cross country ski and biathalon opportunities, and much more. You don't need to be an expert in wilderness survival to get the most out of this exceptional area of Maine. From the largest lake, to the tallest mountain, this area will tempt the outdoor lover in you! Back to One Tank Trips for 2011 Woodall's Recommended Maine RV Campgrounds
