One Tank Trip for Kentucky Camping

Home to Bluegrass music, the Kentucky Derby, some of the finest Bourbon in the world, and the birthplace of Abe Lincoln, this serene state prides itself on the natural environment and beauty found throughout. Boasting one of the most geologically diverse landscapes in the US, Kentucky also contains some of the longest and most beautiful stretches of rivers and streams in the country, making it the most water filled state in the Continental US, and a outdoor lovers paradise. Today, we begin our one tank trip in the city of Florence. Situated in the far northern part of the state, Florence's close proximity to Cincinnati, Ohio offers the metropolitan amenities of city life, while maintaining its peacefully rural feel. What's a visit to Kentucky without getting a glimpse of some of the graceful and beautiful horses this state is known for? Turfway Park is a thoroughbred horse racing track where you can watch some of Kentucky's finest race around the track at incredible speeds. If you're feeling lucky, place a bet or two. Florence is also home to several golf courses and the nation's first arboretum, Boone County Arboretum. Peaceful and serene, the Arboretum has more than 2 miles of walking trails through various plant and shrub collections contained within an amazing 121 acre park. Moving on down I-75 S will take you to our next Kentucky RV camping location, Lexington. This friendly city is home to the Kentucky Horse Park, an actual working museum where visitors can see over 50 different breeds of horses and discover how much work goes into the care and training of these beautiful animals. With two outstanding museums, twin theaters, and an array of horse shows, it's a fascinating place for any horse admirer. Another must see on your trip is the Headley-Whitney Museum, located on the lush grounds of what was once the Headley farm. This wonderful museum houses an amazing collection of dollhouses, and several pieces of jewelry created by George Headley. This also gives you a chance to wander around the grounds, marvel at the beauty of the Kentucky countryside, and enjoy a piece of Lexington history. For the nature lover, the perfect place for you is the Raven Run Nature Center, a 734-acre nature sanctuary dedicated to preserving all the natural beauty of the Kentucky River Palisades and early history. Visitors here are free to commune with nature, hike, bird watch, and explore some of the early remnants of 19th century settlers. Continuing our one tank trip, take KY-4 W and merge onto US-60 W to our last Kentucky RV camping stop, Bardstown. Tranquil and scenic, historic Bardstown offers a wealth of cultural activities for travelers to this area. Starting at the Bardstown's Civil War Museum, visitors will discover the rich Civil War narrative through displays of historical documents, artifacts and exhibits. It is the fourth largest Civil War Museum in the US, so you won't want to miss it. Another must see is the Women of the Civil War Museum, which is dedicated specifically to the role women played during the war as spies, nurses and soldiers: A fascinating place to learn the little known story of these brave women. Even teetotalers can appreciate a tour at one of the many Bourbon distilleries in Bardstown. At the Heaven Hill Distilleries Bourbon Heritage Center, visitors can get a behind the scenes tour of a Bourbon aging brick house, a guide of the cistern room where barrels are filled, and a little taste of the stuff that made Kentucky famous. If you're a lover of trains, you've come to the perfect place! In Bardstown, visitors can still ride the rails aboard vintage train cars pulled by beautifully restored L & N steam locomotives, or relax and enjoy a meal aboard one of the luxurious 1940s dining car as it winds its way through the beautiful Kentucky countryside. Is there a more perfect way to end our one tank trip? With all the beauty and splendor of this state laid out before you, it's easy to see why so many travelers to Kentucky get caught up in her spell.
