One Tank Trip for Idaho Camping

If you've never had the pleasure of taking a trip to Idaho, you're probably wondering what's so great about it. That's where they grow potatoes right? But there is more to the state than just growing delicious vegetables! Encompassing the western side of the continental divide of the Rocky Mountains, Idaho is filled with emerald hillsides, timbered mountains, pristine lakes, and jagged peaks in the central area of the state. Idaho is an outdoorsman's dream, and one of the best kept secrets in the nation. Beginning our one tank trip in Idaho Falls, a city situated at the base of the graceful Blackfoot Mountains, it's hard not to be overwhelmed by the beauty of this area. Literally at the doorstep of some of the most beautiful landmarks in North America, Idaho Falls is an outdoor enthusiast's wish come true. You'll run out of steam long before you ever run out of things to do! Biking, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, rafting, and horseback riding are just a few things to keep you busy. Idaho Falls has more than a few opportunities for shopping and dining, with many other cultural offerings as well, including the Museum of Idaho. Here, visitors will learn all about this beautiful state; from the times of pioneers Lewis & Clark, to the present day, with many exhibits on display, including giant insects and the Columbian mammoth. If you're looking to get your pole wet, cast your line in the nearby Green River, one of the best places in the country to land a trout or two, or ride your bike, run, or just stroll leisurely around this lovely park which spans 14 miles along the river. The next stop on our one tank trip is the equally serene city of Ketchum, less than a four hour drive on US-93 N out of Idaho Falls. Ketchum is a year-round recreation area, and is a gateway to the internationally renowned Sun Valley. Visitors here can not only enjoy some first class skiing, but also hiking, ice skating, trail riding, tennis, cycling, or mush a pack of huskies. Author Ernest Hemingway reportedly wrote his greatest novel here, and is it any wonder? The view is inspirational! Hemingway loved the town of Ketchum so much, he eventually relocated here, and fans can find his grave in the nearby Ketchum Cemetery. The city of Ketchum is filled with art galleries, featuring the works of local and national artists, world class shopping, and many fine restaurants. The town has a little bit for everyone who travels here, no matter the interest. For a view of the valley that will just blow you away, head up to Galena Summit Overlook. Completed in 1881, this route was once a toll road known as Sawtooth Grade. The view from the summit is spectacular! Take scenic Trail Creek Rd out of Ketchum, merge onto US-93 N to arrive at our last Idaho RV camping stop, Salmon. Can you guess what the city of Salmon is known for? That's right, this incredible little town is known as the “Whitewater Capital of the World,” and lies in a prime wild river fishing region at the base of the breathtaking Bitterroot Mountains. The nearby Salmon River is one of the few rivers that escaped being dammed in North America, and is a prime spot for anglers. Spawning season sees tremendous numbers of salmon in the gravel beds, but this river is also filled with rainbow trout, as well as steelhead. Not to be outdone by our other Idaho RV camping stops, Salmon is also a gateway to the mountains, lakes, streams and rivers that surround this area. There are many guides and outfitters available if you're looking to hunt, fish, raft, or horse-pack, and they are more than willing to give you the thrill of a lifetime by escorting you into the back country. Idaho is much, much more than the farmland that stretches across most of the state. The natural beauty and wealth of activities draw visitors by the thousands looking to have some fun, and no matter what the season, Idaho has some incredible things in store for everyone. From the majestic mountains to the salmon filled streams, Idaho should be on every traveler’s list of getaways. Back to One Tank Trips for 2011 Woodall's Recommended Idaho RV Campgrounds
