One Tank Trip for Delaware Camping

There's nothing wrong with being first, and the first state, Delaware, proves that again and again with first-class hospitality, scenic beauty, and some of the most important historical sites in the country. Wherever your travels take you, Delaware RV camping should be at the top of your list. Fenwick Island begins our one tank trip and is one of the most relaxing and serene places you’re likely to find anywhere. Do yourself a big favor and make camp where you have an unobstructed view of the incredible sunset. Such eye-popping wonder should be savored. After the sun goes down, head into town and enjoy a fine dinner at any of the local restaurants, all of which offer fish that were caught – frequently on that very day – by fishermen from town. After a great night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, point the rig north on Highway 1 and drive for a little less than 20 miles into the town of Rehoboth Beach. This is a thriving beachside community, and fun-in-the-sun is the name of the game. Local outlets will gladly rent you a kayak or a bike so you can go out on the water or enjoy the bike trails running along the beach. This town is all about relaxation, so soak in a mud bath at any of the local spas, or whack a few balls around the green at your pick of several golf courses in the area. Eight miles further north on Highway 1 awaits the seaside village of Lewes. This historic town was established in the early 1600s and still retains a great deal of that period’s charm and elegance, while still being rooted firmly in the 21st century. Continuing the tradition of the nearby cities of Rehoboth Beach and Fenwick Island, here you can find wide expanses of sand for you to spread out a blanket and enjoy the sunshine. The local wildlife refuge is a prime spot to go bird watching, or perhaps you’d like to hike or bike around town on one of the trails. You can rent a fishing boat, or take part in a crabbing expedition and take dinner home with you (just watch your fingers). Our one tank trip continue by leaving Lewes via the northbound Highway 1, drive for about 34 miles until you come to the city limits of Dover, Delaware’s state capital. In addition to touring the state capitol building, you’ll find the Dover Air Force Base and Air Mobility Command Museum to be a fascinating visit. The museum is an impressive facility, showcasing three-dozen aircraft, ranging from WWII-era fighters to the high-tech, present day combat aircraft. The Dover Downs Casino is also a popular destination, featuring Vegas-style opulence, with all manner of gambling, including a vast array of slot machines and horse racing. There’s no better way to watch the ponies race around the track than in person, under the shade, with a cool beverage in your hand. With a few winnings in your pocket, it’s time to continue north on Highway 1 and take it for about 50 miles to your final Delaware RV camping stop, Wilmington. History buffs will enjoy the Wilmington and Western Railroad Museum, which displays the railroad that was completed in the mid 1800s, and offers visitors the chance to ride in vintage locomotives. There are also several botanical and herb gardens in town that feature a variety of flora in various stages of bloom throughout the year. Without a doubt, Delaware lives up to its “First State” status, making it a fun, peaceful and scenic destination with ample opportunities for recreation and relaxation!
