Delaware

The state of Delaware welcomes visitors to Dover’s NASCAR and harness races, Milford’s hiking and boating options, and the splendid seashores of Rehoboth, Dewey, and Bethany Beaches and Fenwick Island.
The city of Dover’s Air Mobility Command Museum displays a well-rounded collection of military and tanker aircraft. Cargo planes, bombers, helicopters, and fighters are all represented; there’s a flight simulator that gives visitors over the age of ten a well-supervised opportunity to test their piloting skills. Accounts of several American Medal of Honor recipients’ courageous actions are told in the museum’s Hall of Heroes. Dover Downs features high-energy harness racing, plenty of slot machines, live entertainment, and casino-style dining. At Dover International Speedway, join in on speedy NASCAR fun at triple-header “Monster Mile” race weekends held twice annually. From Dover, take US-113 south to Milford. Go for an easy hike through meadows and woods at the Delaware Nature Society’s Abbott’s Mill Nature Center. Rent a watercraft, go for a sail, or book a seat on a charter fishing boat in Delaware Bay or the Atlantic Ocean, at Adam’s Wharf and Indian River Marina.
From Milford, take Delaware Hwy 1 south all the way to Fenwick Island, stopping to see the sights at several beach communities. Start by soaking in Rehoboth Beach’s quintessential resort area boardwalk. On the mile-long trek, sink your teeth into beach-style treats like fresh funnel cakes and chewy taffy. Rehoboth’s Jolly Trolley can easily shuttle you to the seashore’s boutiques, top-notch restaurants, and a whole host of other amusements and points of interest.
A quieter side of Delaware may be found further south at Dewey Beach, where a narrow sandbar is all that separates the Atlantic Ocean from Rehoboth Bay. Angling, boating, and a complete line-up of water sports are popular pastimes at Dewey.
Bethany Beach keeps your itinerary humming with its historic Fenwick Lighthouse, beautiful boardwalk, and challenging golf at Salt Pond Golf Club. The Made by Hand International Cooperative is a fair trade establishment that supports artisan enterprises around the world. Hand-crafted musical instruments, jewelry, apparel, and domestic wares are available for purchase inside.
At the “bottom” of the Delaware, on Hwy 1, undisturbed beaches and a relaxed pace of life grace Fenwick Island’s barrier island community. See who’s swimming in the fish tanks at Discover Sea Shipwreck Museum. Look! There’s silver and gold bars, coins, jewels, and pottery recovered from sunken ships by local treasure salvors. Take time to tour the museum’s conservation lab and local marine history displays.
