One Tank Trip for Yukon Camping

If you're looking for an adventure that will test you, try you and inspire you, the Yukon Territories are the place you'll want to plan your next trip. Make no mistake; this area is the northern gem of Canada, but also one of the most rugged areas in the world, reserved especially for those of us looking to come nose-to-nose with Mother Nature and all she has to offer. Today, we begin one tank trip in Yukon's capital, Whitehorse, whose long history is owed mostly to the boom of the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th Century. As remote as it is beautiful, Whitehorse welcomes thousands of visitors who come to marvel at the 24-hour sunlight and pay a visit to the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre. A fascinating place, the Interpretive Centre tells the tale of the first arctic people of North America, giant mammals and ice that covered the land, and interpretive information and dioramas. Another highlight you should be sure to take in is the MacBride museum, which spans a whopping four city blocks and features some incredible moments in history of the Yukon region. Our Yukon RV camping continues on by taking Alaska Hwy/HWY 1 out of Whitehorse and making a right onto HWY 2/S Klondike Hwy. This leg of the one tank trip should take you approximately an hour-and-a-half, weather permitting. Located on the north end of Bennett Lake and at the mouth of the Natasaheenie River, Carcross is a year-round destination for travelers seeking the peaceful beauty of the mountainous area that surround it. Your outdoor recreation possibilities are endless in Carcross, with the summer months bringing boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, biking, and a whole list of other goodies. Whatever you can imagine, you can find it here! For the winter, dog sledding, ice fishing and skiing are just a few of the outdoor activities you can dive right into. When you find time to take in a little sightseeing, stop by the Caribou Crossing Trading Post where you can peruse the Wildlife Museum, pan for gold, and even grab a bite of lunch inside a Chuckwagon. It's truly a unique experience, but not quite as unique as the smallest desert in the world, the Carcross Desert. Make sure you take plenty of photographs of this tiny wonder! Let's head out to our last Yukon RV camping stop, Tagish. Taking Carcross Hwy/HWY 8 out of Carcross, this leg of the one tank trip should take you around 40 minutes. Tagish, in Athabascan means “fish trap”, and with a local lake bearing the same name, you can bet there is some good fishing to be had in these waters! Measuring some 60 miles long, Tagish Lake is one of the most popular trout fishing areas within the Territories, and if fishing doesn't do much for you, there is a list of other activities to do in scenic Tagish, including hiking, boating, biking, skiing, and kayaking, just to name a few. If you're feeling more than a little adventurous, there are several dogsledding outfitters that will take you out from one hour, to several days (if you really want a once-in-a-lifetime experience). For first timers, the Yukon is alarmingly beautiful, inspiring, and has all the wild adventure you can handle. If you really have the urge to get away from it all, you've come to the right place.
