One Tank Trip for Saskatchewan Camping

Nestled between Alberta and Manitoba, Saskatchewan lies in the heart of the Canadian Prairies. Beautifully rural and forested, Saskatchewan is infectious. With so much wide, open sky, this amazing province leaves every visitor with a sense of calm that will invariably draw them back to explore all of the beauty and cultural diversity that makes this area so unique. Today, our one tank trip starts in Weyburn, a definite charmer of a city, and host to some incredible possibilities for some outdoor fun. Travelers will find no shortage of hiking, camping, and golfing in the area. For the culture seeker, Weyburn is host to some interesting sights, like the King George Hotel, which was once riddled with bullets by Billy the Kid. And of course, you won't want to leave Weyburn without a stop to the Soo Line Historical Museum, which houses a wide display of theme items, from old general store products, to agricultural and mental hospital displays. Both fascinating and educational! Let's head out to our next Saskatchewan RV camping stop - Estevan - by heading south on Government Rd, and taking a left at HWY 39. In a little over an hour, you should be smack in the middle of Estevan, the eighth largest city in the province. For anglers and boating enthusiasts, head over to the Boundry or Rafferty Dam. Both are favorites of the locals, and ideal fishing spots. To immerse yourself in local history, head over to the Souris Valley Museum where you'll encounter an array of historical artifacts. To discover why Estevan is also known as “Energy City”, tours can be taken of local power stations and greenhouse. It's an entertaining tour, and one that just might surprise you. Moving on to our last Saskatchewan RV camping stop, take HWY 47 out of Estevan, and take a right onto HWY 13. Small and peaceful, Carlyle is located just south of Moose Mountain Provincial Park, one of Saskatchewan's five original provincial parks. The town has had a status as a vacation spot well before its establishment in 1931. Visitors are surrounded by the beauty of aspen, white birch and ash trees, and within the park there are multiple opportunities for hiking, fishing, cooling off in the big waterslide complex, horseback riding, and even golf and tennis. The local casino draws quite a crowd and there are quite a few first-class restaurants to dine in, and wonderful shops to peruse. If you want to extend your one tank trip just a little further past Carlyle, stop by the Cannington Manor Provincial Park. Once the dream of British settlers to build a society on Victorian social values complete with poetry clubs and fox hunts, Cannington manor enjoyed a brief, but successful life prior to the 1900s. Today, you can wander through period buildings and original artifacts, and costumed staff are onsite to bring the whole experience to life through demonstrations and interpretive programs. The beauty of the Saskatchewan prairie has a way of instilling a gentle calm from the very moment you visit. Here, within this province, time seems to slow down, making for a relaxing, one-of-a-kind experience. Back to One Tank Trips for 2011 Woodall's Recommended Saskatchewan RV Campgrounds
