Saskatchewan

Just to the north of Montana and North Dakota, a completely fresh vacation experience awaits for those who’ve never been to Saskatchewan. It’s a haven for the nature lover, with countless opportunities to go freshwater fishing, horseback riding, or kayaking. There’s plenty of wildlife roaming free, and when your province is called the Land of Living Skies, you know that those sunsets are going to have to be seen to be believed. But there’s also a bustling city life, too. Countless opportunities for dining, shopping, and nightlife await you just north of the border in Saskatchewan.
Saskatoon, in the southeastern part of the province, kicks off this road trip and is a great place to start your getaway. It has several conservation areas such as Beaver Creek, where forest, prairie, and creek life are in protected habitats, and where nature trails wind around for your exploration. There are also countless art galleries, showcasing all kinds of paintings and sculpture, many of which spotlight the area’s indigenous Native artists. Poplar Bluffs features a canoe launch, where you can start a paddling trip downriver into the city. Add to this all kinds of dining and shopping and you’re off to a great start!
Traveling northwest on Provincial Route 16, a little over 80 miles later you’ll come to Battleford. It can be safely said that this city has something for everyone. Nature walks through wildlife preserves, museums with exhibits that proudly tell the tale of Saskatchewan’s early days when settlers and Natives first met, and for the history aficionado, there’s Fort Battleford. Constructed in the late 19th century, the fort stood in defense against hostile Native raiders and helped settle the land and make it what it is today. Tours are available through four original buildings, filled with artifacts from the period.
Lloydminster is 85 miles northwest from Battleford, continuing up the PR-16. The city has nearly thirty city parks with trails just waiting to be explored, plenty of shopping opportunities, with a teeming downtown shopping district which includes the Lloyd Mall. And for our four-legged traveling companions, there are off-leash parks where they can run freely and feel the wind in their fur. The surrounding natural areas provide you with a great escape to the outdoors, and a chance to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Whatever you’re looking for, Lloydminster is a great place to find it. The same can be said of all of Saskatchewan, an undiscovered vacation destination just waiting to be explored.
