Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is referred to as the “Garden of the Gulf” because of its lush, vibrant greenery and rich, natural beauty. The island has miles of reddish-white beaches, ocean coves, and vast, unspoiled forests. The communities on the island maintain a slow-paced lifestyle, which is one of the leading draws for tourists who make Prince Edward Island their choice for a getaway. No matter what season you plan your visit, Prince Edward Island is a perfect example of the word “leisure.”
Accessing the island via the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick, your first stop is the portside town of Borden-Carleton. There are plenty of restaurants and shops on hand that cater to tourists, and the nearby Gateway Village is your one-stop shop for maps and guides to Prince Edward Island.
Heading east on Provincial Route 1 for a little over 30 miles, you come to the island’s capital city of Charlottetown. This area draws visitors from all over Canada as well as the upper eastern United States, who come to see the historic downtown district with its Victorian architecture. The redeveloped waterfront district has been redesigned and walking and biking trails have been installed for your waterside exercise opportunities. The Charlottetown Festival is a popular summer event, held at the Charlottetown Centre for the Arts, and features an impressive set of live theater experiences, both dramatic and musical.
Leaving Charlottetown by way of PR-15, travel 30 miles northwest to the city of Cavendish. This is the setting of Anne of Green Gables, the literary classic by Lucy Maud Montgomery. As such, it’s one of the leading tourist attractions on Prince Edward Island and there’s a variety of things to see and do here like amusement parks, restaurants, shops, and some of the best beaches to be found on the island. Brackley Beach, in particular, is an excellent place to go looking for birds and small mammal life. The fishing village of North Rustico serves some of the best seafood you’ll ever have, or maybe catch your own dinner on a deep sea fishing trip.
Once you’ve had your fill of fantastic seafood, it’s time to get back on the road, so point the RV west on the PR-6 for a quick 20-mile drive to your ultimate destination of Summerside. Along with great beaches, the Summerside Raceway is a great place to spend a day, watching exciting harness races, while enjoying a tasty lunch from the grandstands. The Downtown district has an eclectic array of affordable shops with plenty of opportunities for dining and entertainment, and is a great place to bring your Prince Edward Island adventure to a relaxing conclusion.
