Ontario-Southeast

We start this Lake Erie-friendly tour in the town Amherstburg for a tour of the Fort Malden National Historic Site on the Detroit River. The fort provides a fun glimpse into military life during the era of the War of 1812. Amherstburg’s Gibson Gallery occupies a former Michigan Central Railroad Station and is well worth a visit. A variety of paintings, creative stitchery, and student art may be viewed there. Walk through a 1790s-vintage Victorian home at Park House Museum and experience tours and wine tastings at Sanson and D’Angelo Estates’ Wineries before continuing on your way.
From Amherstburg, take County Road 18 east. Just before Leamington, pick up Kings Hwy 3 southeast into Leamington and continue onto County Road 3, heading northeast to St. Thomas. Circus history fans might recall the sad tale of Jumbo the Elephant, a famous performing pachyderm killed in a train run-over in St. Thomas, Ontario in 1885. In present-day St. Thomas, the legendary elephant is memorialized with a prominent circus-themed mural and life-size model. Don’t forget to pay your respects.
From St. Thomas, drive north on Kings Hwy 4 north and Kings Road 401 northeast into London. While in London, take a double-decker bus outing, shop at Covent Garden Market, and visit the town’s Museum of Archaeology. Tour the Bellamere Winery or Labatt Brewery for some well-earned samples before heading over to the Fanshawe Pioneer Village to experience 19th century life in southern Ontario. Actually, maybe the brewery/winery is a better way to end your day, no?
