One Tank Trip for Niagara Falls, Ontario Camping

Without a doubt, this amazing section of Ontario is one of the richest historical areas in all of Canada, preserved and readily available to those lucky enough to cross these borders. From wine routes and breathtaking gardens, to sandy beaches and quaint villages that offer exquisite culinary delights and wonderful artisan treasures; you'll find it here, all nestled within one of the most popular tourist destinations in Canada. From Niagara Falls, head south on Highway 190 for 14 miles, then take the westbound Highway 3 for 6 more miles until you come to Ridgeway, the first destination on our one tank trip. This charming town gets quite a few tourists during the summer, who come to enjoy the quiet atmosphere and visit the local wineries. Fort Erie is a popular place to visit here, having been built in the late 18th century by British Imperial Loyalists, where it served them well in their war against the French. Today, it continues to serve the public as a history museum with exhibits and artifacts that tell the tale of its glory days. A mere 13 miles west on Highway 3 continues our Ontario RV camping adventure. Here you’ll find Port Colborne, a thriving city on the banks of the Welland Canal. This is a great place to visit in the summer, with its wide sandy expanses of Nickel Beach that are perfect for getting out and enjoying a day in the sunshine. There’s a water slide, plenty of places to play a round of golf, or sites to take a horseback tour of the area. Visit the Port Colborne Historical and Maritime Museum for an intriguing glimpse at the area’s history, then enjoy a picnic lunch by the banks of the Welland Canal. The next destination on our one tank trip, Dunnville, is located at the end of a westbound 20-mile drive across Highway 3. It’s easily accessed from the U.S., being just an hour’s drive north of the border. Lake Erie’s just a short drive away as well, so this is a beautiful spot to put the rig in park and make camp. Dunnville is a quaint throwback to Victorian times, with streets lit by coach-light lanterns. There are several festivals and events going on throughout the year, such as June’s yearly Mudcat Festival. This gala features parades, carnival attractions, and a nightly fireworks extravaganza. The Port Maitland Pier is a good place to take a leisurely stroll and look out over the waters, or take a wildlife hike through the Byng Island Conservation Area. Once you’ve experienced Niagara Falls and its surrounding communities, you can’t help but fall in love with the area. If this isn’t your first time visiting, prepare to fall in love with the place all over again. Back to One Tank Trips for 2011 Woodall's Recommended Ontario RV Campgrounds
