As you journey through the Sooner State, you’ll see more geographic diversity than in any other state in the U.S. In the west you’ll encounter high plains, while the southeast is where you’ll find the wetlands, less than 300 feet above sea level. There are nearly a dozen separate ecological areas in Oklahoma, from arid plains to thick forests. Whatever you’re looking for when it comes to outdoor fun, there’s a better than even chance you’ll find it right here in Oklahoma.
Located on historic Route 66, Elk City has a well-deserved reputation for hospitality, and is very proud of its history. This one tank trip destination has several museums in town that spotlight Elk City’s colorful past, including the Old Town Museum which is dedicated to telling the tale of Western pioneers who settled the area in the late 1800s, and the National Route 66 Museum, which highlights the highway that cuts through eight states, running from Chicago to California.
The majority of this road adventure will be spent on the eastbound I-40, and as with most road trips, half the fun is getting there. Your next stop of Clinton is waiting for you a little over 20 miles to the east on the I-40. In addition to great shopping and golfing, Clinton is home to Foss Lake, which boasts a large population of striped bass and catfish. Rent a boat and try your luck, or maybe fasten on a pair of water skis and skim across the water on a sunny afternoon. Grab a tasty lunch at the floating restaurant, a popular attraction here at the lake. If you’ve had no luck with fishing, see if you can turn things around at any of the casinos you’ll find on Indian land, or play a sure thing with the buffet plate. That’s a guaranteed winner! See the links below for recommended Oklahoma camping.
Driving fifty miles further east on the I-40 takes you to the city limits of El Reno, a fun little city located between Route 66 and the Chisholm Trail. The historic Old Town district has a wide selection of shops where you’ll find souvenirs and antiques from the Victorian era and the days of the Old West. You can tour this area either by foot or with the trolley system that takes you from downtown to Heritage Park. We recommend taking the trolley as it’s the best way to see this city. While you’re here, head over to Lake El Reno and see the herd of buffalo that calls this area home, or enjoy the 300-acre lake by jet skiing, boating, or taking a swim. Once you take a look around town, you’ll see why this town is growing in popularity as a tourist destination and for Oklahoma camping.
Time to hit the big city. The state capital of Oklahoma City is 25 miles east of El Reno via the I-40, and is packed with so many adventures to occupy your time that there’s no way to cover it adequately. For the history buff, there are museums and monuments aplenty, ranging from the Oklahoma Railway Museum to the Governor’s Mansion. Arcadia Lake and the Chesapeake Boathouse are two of the many places geared towards pleasing the fan of water-borne activities, and for those looking to peruse around town and see the sights, make sure not to miss the Adventure District. This spot features an eclectic selection of museums, botanical gardens, a zoo, and a 20-screen theater multiplex, packed into a mere two miles. When you factor in the golf courses, ice skating arenas, art galleries, shopping districts, and even a roller coaster-heavy theme park, you can see that several return trips are in order to enjoy everything that Oklahoma City has to offer.
Heading south on the I-35 takes you 13 miles from Oklahoma City into the community of Norman. This town is stocked with casinos, one being the largest in all of Oklahoma – and that’s saying something! This area is also the heart of Oklahoma’s wine country, so treat your palate to a tasting of some of the region’s finest wines, then head over to Lake Thunderbird and watch the sky change colors as the sun sinks past the water’s glassy surface.
Seeing everything Oklahoma has to offer is next to impossible on a single one tank trip vacation, but one thing you can count on is that the warm and friendly people will welcome you back again next year, or sooner. Hmmm…is this why they call it the “sooner” state? Probably not - but it fits.
