The fine state of Missouri is one of those rare places in our nation where visitors feel right at home. Whether it’s the down-home atmosphere or the friendly locals, folks who’ve traveled through this area claim to have felt a true sense of belonging, even though they were miles from their own stomping grounds. utdoor enthusiasts have been drawn to Missouri for generations, as some of the best whitewater rafting and fishing can be found here, since both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers flow through this state. Though it’s called the Show Me State, Missouri has plenty to show us when it comes to vacation activities.
There’s no question about it, the first city of Joplin on this one tank trip has cornered the market on fun. These people really know how to have a good time, as evidenced by the many attractions and festivals hosted by this fabulous city. Among the many events that take place in Joplin, you can enjoy the Boomtown Days festival, which takes place over several days in the summer and pays homage to the area’s origins as a mining community. There’s the semi-annual Airfest, where various types of airplanes perform daring acts of skill and stunt work guaranteed to take your breath away. Not for the squeamish, Joplin is the host city of the Reptile World Zoo, where you can get up close – maybe too close – with some of the most bizarre and unusual creatures that walk or slither across the earth. If you’re looking for something a little tamer, take an informative tour through the Joplin Museum Complex, which features no fewer than five separate museums dedicated to educating visitors about Joplin’s contributions to the nation, ranging from the mining industry, to the world of sports.
From here, take a leisurely, scenic drive east on the I-44, and about 60 miles later you’ll enter the city limits of Springfield. If you’re looking to spend some time out in the sunshine while Missouri camping, you’ve come to the right place. With no fewer than seven courses in the immediate area, the golf enthusiast will have ample opportunity to find a teeing off point. For the spelunkers among you, take a tour down the winding paths that guide you through Crystal Cave, a natural wonder with unique rock formations and an underground waterfall. Enjoy a day of boating and fishing at Fellows Lake, or maybe just dangle your feet in the water. Other points of interest in the area include the Air & Military Museum of the Ozarks, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and the Pythian Castle - a “certified haunted” site, built in the early 1900s. It features over 55 rooms, a ballroom, and believe it or not, it’s even equipped with its own dungeon. Visit if you dare…
A southbound drive down the US-65 takes you through 40 miles of some picturesque Missouri terrain before bringing you to your ultimate destination on this one tank trip, Branson. Welcome to the live entertainment capitol of the South, and quite possibly that of the entire east coast. More than a whopping seven million people visit Branson each year, and those numbers do nothing but grow. There are more shows than you can shake the proverbial stick at, with a wide range of variety. Dancing pooches, tributes to every era of rock ‘n’ roll, acrobats, comedians sure to give your funny bone a good workout, and world-famous entertainers such as Tony Orlando, Mickey Gilley, and the Oak Ridge Boys are only some of the staggering selections you’ll have to pick from. One of the great things about Branson is that you never know which entertainer will pop in for a surprise visit. Among the offbeat and unusual attractions, you’ll find the Roy Rogers Museum, and a collection of the bizarre at Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum. Once you see what Branson’s all about, you’ll want to make this a frequent return Missouri camping destination whenever you’re in the area.
After you’ve experienced the diverse activities and attractions to be found in the Show Me State, you’ll see that Missouri “shows you” one heck of a good time, no matter what time of year you visit.
