Lodgepole is a well maintained Forrest Service Campground located on Hwy 410 in Washington State east of the top of Chinook Pass. It is reasonably convenient by vehicle to a number of entrances to Mount Rainier National Park on the eastern side of the park. The campground has minimal amenities. Potable water taps are located in the park, but are designed for filling Jerry cans and water vessels for tent campers and not designed for hooking up a hose and filling your RV's freshwater tanks. The campground has minimal amenities. Potable water taps are located in the park, but are designed for filling Jerry cans and water vessels for tent campers and not designed for hooking up a hose and filling your RV's freshwater tanks. There are no hookups in any of the camp sites, however the driveways and campsites have asphalt parking pads. There are a mix of pull thru and back in camp sites. Pull-thru sites are arc shaped, so vehicle length will have a significant impact on how easy it is to get in and out of the pull-thru sites. Be sure to put in your full vehicle length on Recreation.gov when searching for sites as that will help you actually book a site that fits your rig.
Restroom facilities on site are pit toilets. They do appear to be maintained, but they are still pit toilets, you'll be more comfortable showing up and using your onboard facilities, so be sure to arrive with a full fresh tank and empty holding tanks.
While the campground is mostly rustic, there are camp hosts on site and they actively patrol the campground and are active in providing assistance when it is desired. They also keep track of and notate first-come, first-served camp sites on the information board at the entry to the campground. The camp hosts also had firewood available for sale at their site.
The campground is well maintained and clean. Campsites have a large fire ring and reasonably decent picnic table. A burn ban my prevent fires in the campground fire rings, but that shouldn't diminish the pleasure of camping in someplace that is so beautiful. We were in pull-thru #2. It is considered an 85ft length, which was sufficient for a large class A with a car. The arc of the driveway was significant meaning that side to side width of the drive with the RV in it made for tight maneuvering.
If you are wondering where to dump after camping, well you have to carry it with you some distance. I'm not aware of a dump site any any of the Forrest Service campgrounds, but Squaw Rock farther east on 410 does have a dump station and may allow non-guests to dump there for a fee. We really enjoyed this campground and would go back any time in the near future.
