Very nice park with some great hiking trails that from what we saw are well marked. One trail we wanted to take was closed due to recent storm damage. The trail that goes around much of the lake is nice but needs to be expanded to go completely around the lake. Like imagining what it would have been like here back in the 30s,40s,60s when the bath house would have been in full swing. Don't think they do anything with it now. Living history farm was really nice and interesting. Animal wise we saw donkeys and horses. Perhaps when Spring arrives that will add chickens and some other animals.
Stayed in the campground. For the most part the sites are very close together, reminded me more of a commercial campground more than a state park. We had site 71 which I consider the absolute BEST site in the campground. It is VERY private. The trail back face the neighbors so when outside, you couldn't see them. The other side you have NO neighbors. I think there was a site there but is no longer used. If if it was used, still be would be a problem as it was still a ways off. Nothing but woods behind. The site is on a turn so you can get your trailer straight and then easily back in. A 2nd choice would be site 97. Also on a turn, but there is one large tree you would have to navigate around. All the other sites you are packed in. I wouldn't stay here unless I could get 71 or 97.
The bathrooms are typical SC State Park bathrooms. Most were still closed, I think only one was open. Due to the corona virus we chose to utilize our camper faculties 100%. Sites are not level so you will need to prepare for that. We easily got our unit level on 71, it wasn't that bad, but some sites are. A lot of the fire rings are rusting out and need to be replaced. Actually, most of the campsites could use some work. New gravel to level them out and rail rode ties to keep them level. Of course, this cast money.
Park known for its horse trails. Seems very popular as there were at least 20 horse trailers parked on the Saturday we were there. Horse trails link up the National Park. Horse campsites have no water or electric. Each site has 2 corals for horses, they looked like 12x12. There is water available so you will be hauling buckets. I have camped with horses and it is a lot of work even when your campsite has water/electric and there is a stable available with water/electric. I would do a day trip here to ride, would not camp with horses.
Staff that we dealt with were fine, no issues.
Overall a good State Park. We are trying to hit SC Parks that we have not camped at before, at least one year. While we had an enjoyable visit we would not rush back. The National Military Park was our main motivation for this trip and it was worth it.
