Appeal Rating Cheaha State Park is an excellent facility. We made sure to book in the upper campground to avoid the issues mentioned by a previous reviewer about the lower campground access. The upper campground in located in a nice stretch of hilly woods. The spaces are very well laid out, spacious and seem to be generally quite level (we stayed twice in different spaces). The outer pull through sites are the best as there is a good distance of open woods facing the door side of each camper with a nice fire ring and table. There is hiking, including boardwalks for those less mobile, with vista viewpoints (Cheaha is at the top of Alabama's tallest mountain (which is only reasonably high). There is also a casual restaurant near the entrance with great views over the valley to other mountains in the distance. No issues with the full hookups, the were all accessible and fully functional. All the campers were relatively short stay so no long term camper debris issues. The restroom block was very clean and relatively new.
The only drawback in my opinion is the distance from the main roads in the area. The road into the park is about 20 minutes of climbing the mountain and many turns but not tight switchbacks, the 281 roadway is excellent so it is a matter of time to get in/out rather than being difficult. The facility is very crowded on weekends with day visitors during peak season in fall for the leaf color and cooler temps. We arrived during the week (early November) for our first night and on the weekend for our second. The first arrival was as smooth as could be, no line and no hassle. The second on the weekend was a 30 minute tailback creeping up the last mile to the ranger station with difficulty parking and several staff in the road doing their best to direct the excessive traffic. Another 15 minutes line wait to check in etc.
If coming this way, and assuming we had multiple days to enjoy the park vs just an overnight, I would definitely camp here again.
