On the recommendation of a few friends we choose CherryStone as our FIRST trip! What was going to be a 5 day Spring Break run, ended up to be a FULL 9 DAYs due to our Daughter having a dace competition in Virginia Beach and CherryStone being closer than our home.
We stayed in Site 66 ... which was BEAUTIFUL to look over the sand dune and see the cargo ships coming in and going out every Morning and night. Our only complaint is the people in Site 65 ignoring the site lines that are clear on the map. Rule #1 is to "Not be a jerk" so we gave grace and made it a non-issue. Had we needed to park 2 vehicles in the space, then it would have become a problem. (Our youngest son joined us for 3 nights and had to park our second vehicle in the parking lot for the beach access. No big deal as it is Spring season and the park was not busy. Otherwise he would have had to park near the caf‚.) Our BIGGEST complaint at CherryStone is that there is no clear site boundaries in the original campground. The newer parts of the campground have better site lines that make clear boundaries with either gravel pads or vegetation.
There are also no Firepits, so campers are allowed to start fires wherever on their sites. We choose a previously burned out section and purchased a fire ring from the store for about $40 (not much higher than Amazon) It is MUCH cheaper to purchase firewood at the trailers up the road. I think it was $7 per armload. Where CherryStone sells wood at $1 per piece. Bring cash unless you want to hike to the store and then over by the jumping pillows on the other side of the park for wood.
Since it was the start of Spring Season, we ended up with only 1 other camper on our "island" during the week. Thursday through Sunday seems to be peak camping days.
Well planned out activities over the weekend. Especially on Saturday. We had new camping neighbors who came in on Thursday night and planned on leaving Saturday morning. They ended up extending to Sunday because of ALL the things for families to do on Saturday.
Jumping Pillows, Playground, Putt Putt, and the General Store were all well maintained and stocked. I took a shower in the Bathhouse once ... it WAS near the end of the cleaning cycle and so there was issues with hair and stuff being in the shower stalls. However, the mixer valve only allowed for the shower to get mildly warm. Discovered that a "RV Shower" was actually warmer than the bathhouse. (Cleaner too) I guess I am used to Busch Gardens where a bathroom attendant mops up the water on the floor and sinks. It always seemed to be flooded whenever I went in with my daughter. Maybe Summer staff is able to keep on top of it more. It looked nice and modern, but I think the colder shower and water puddles were a turn off.
I will be honest and say that there were a few groups of campers that did not tend to their children. One group had pre-teens at the Jumping Pillows that were using "non-family appropriate" language. I work in education and so I used my "teacher voice" when I hear a few choice words come out of one of the kiddos. Afterwards two groups of parents thanked me and said that they had reported it to staff the day before and it wasn't really handled. Everyone deserves chances, but it was clear that these kids needed better supervision. Would have been nice to have more rounds from staff members at public/rec areas. The second group was a family staying in the cabins near the jumping pillows. They forced the older siblings to take the toddler/pre-schooler along. Both times crossing the street the small child ran out into traffic. I honestly felt more sorry for the older sibling that was no more than elementary school aged. I'm hopeful that Summer season provides more staffing that can be placed to monitor these types of situations. It's kind of like working in education ... titles seem to get a better response. If CheeryStone had staff members speaking to parents about the need for supervision, it would possibly go over much better than another camp family.

Stayed one night as a "walk in." had been raining for a while. Mosquitoes were as big as horse flies and plenty of them. Bite stung. Facility looked nice, but couldn't get out fast enough.

Arrived 2 hours before the registration office was to close and found it locked, if it wasn't for a local individual who lives on site, I would have never noted that my location was changed/that they evacuated the campground the day before and what I should do! We went to the site which was different than reserved, setup and spent the night. Next morning we walked from the site to the General Store, we ran into a worker and he advised us that there was 7" of water over 100 yards from the shore line! On our way up to the Store we had to pass three campground workers and said hello, none replied, and a few feet down the road we were almost run over by one of the employees in their golf cart. We proceeded to the registration center to complete our paperwork, interestingly we found out that the clerk passed us by @ 505pm on her way out of the campground and that they did not record my cell phone since I was traveling after I advised them of that fact but stated that they called my home phone, leaving a message. No message was left when we returned! The site we were at was breathtaking at sunrise, but the overwhelming disrespect was not appreciated.
